Prof Emeritus Dato' Dr Ikram Shah Ismail is one of Malaysia’s foremost experts in Endocrinology & Diabetology, renowned for his deep clinical experience, high-academic credentials, and leadership in research and education. He earned his medical degree from the University of Queensland, then trained in endocrinology/diabetes in the UK, including obtaining MRCP (UK) in 1989. He completed his PhD from the University of Wales in 1993 with a thesis on hypothalamic regulation in diabetes. Since returning to Malaysia, he has combined treating complex endocrine and metabolic disorders with pioneering research (basic & clinical), particularly in diabetic vasculopathy. He has also held senior leadership roles: Deputy Dean (Research), Director of the Clinical Investigation Centre, and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine as well as Director of the UM Medical Centre. His numerous fellowships (Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, American College of Endocrinology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, among others) and recent appointment to Professor Emeritus underline his lifelong contribution.
