Complaint Against Dr. Alexander Tan Tong Boon for Unethical and Rude Behavior I am writing to formally complain about the behavior of Dr. Alexander Tan Tong Boon during my mother’s recent treatment at your hospital. While I understand the pressures on healthcare professionals, his conduct was highly unprofessional and deeply troubling. My mother has been receiving treatment for influenza. After her condition stabilized and her fever had subsided, oxygen levels were normal. Her sugar levels were controlled, and I inquired through the nurse if Dr. Alexander could consider discharging her so we could continue monitoring her at home. Her medication, including Tamiflu, could be administered orally at home, and my mother had grown increasingly restless during her extended stay at the hospital. When the nurse relayed my request, Dr. Alexander responded to me through a telephone call in an extremely condescending and arrogant manner. He raised his voice and said, "Oh, you want both your parents to get sick, is it?" When I explained that I was the only one available to care for both my parents and could better manage them at home, he made an inappropriate and insensitive remark, "Oh, I know, Sunway is expensive, right? You cannot afford to pay, right?" I find Dr. Alexander’s remark not only condescending but also arrogant. As a doctor, his purpose is to assist patients and their families with medical advice, not to make rude remarks undermining a patient’s financial capability. It is both unethical and unprofessional for any healthcare provider to suggest that financial concerns are the reason behind a patient's or family’s decision. His behavior was highly inappropriate, particularly in a situation where I was seeking medical advice for the well-being of my mother. I cannot help but wonder if the condescending statements and remarks made by Dr. Alexander toward me were influenced by my race, as I am Malay, and my mother's medical bills are not covered by insurance. Nonetheless, such remarks are prejudiced and racist. Furthermore, I would like to highlight that as per Sunway’s Patient Rights and Responsibilities, no provision allows a doctor to make such comments when a patient or family member seeks medical advice or requests a second opinion. His conduct goes against the principles outlined in these guidelines and reflects poorly on the standard of care your hospital is expected to uphold. I kindly request that you address this matter urgently and take appropriate action to ensure that no other patient or family experiences such disrespectful treatment in the future. I will proceed to file a formal complaint on this matter.

One word to describe the entire experience. LOST! Before arrival, I was informed to be at SMC by 7am for Admission. When I arrived, I went to the covid tent as staff needs to check if my results were negative BEFORE letting me in. Unfortunately nobody bothered to check & I was redirected to Emergency as the actual Admission counters have yet to open. When I got myself into the Emergency, I didn’t even notice any booths to get a number and had to go to the counter and ask staff to be attended. After the admin checked my form, I was again redirected to a different floor for Admission. As I made my way up , the signages were not prominent at all but I managed to find my way to the Daycare Admission counter. The paperwork went on smoothly however I was not informed if I was going to receive a room or shared ward. So again, I was caught by surprise that I was ushered to a communal ward without knowing if I get to choose a private room or it is a necessity to share ward with so many folks during covid. I did not want to delay the process hence I went along with this arrangement but it would be good if staff can keep me informed on an arrangement as such. After the nurse showed me my bed space, she walked away without informing me what are the next steps. Again I was waiting not knowing what is the process before surgery. A good half an hour passed and a nurse attended to me to take my GP and left the gowns on the drawer. Also I had to ask if there is a place where I could keep my valuables. Only then the nurse mentioned about a locker. Shouldn’t this be part of SOP to inform patients? Then when I was about to change into the gown, there were two but there was no mention why were there two given to me?? Again, I had to walk out to the counter and ask what’s the difference as both were the same size. Turns out that the intent was to have me put on the longer gown instead of the short one. However they had given me gowns of the same size and I had to change AGAIN. Finally, it was time for me to be wheeled to the op theatre and off I went to a different floor. When I arrived, the staff was attentive and checked my details multiple times to avoid errors. As my surgery time was getting closer nobody had wheeled me into the the op theatre. After a long wait, it took a very competent doctor whom attended to me earlier (anaesthetist Dr Tan - thank you) to direct the nurses to bring me into the room immediately. At this point everyone was just scrambling. Finally, my surgeon arrived and surgery was performed successfully. However, when I was wheeled back into the ward that is where I was left alone not knowing what are the next steps AGAIN. There should be an SOP where the staff informs patient if a nurse was going to come back in a few minutes to check in or at least place the buzzer near me so I can buzz if I require assistance! Finally it was time to go home and a nurse was diligent in getting a wheelchair service for me. However this was a half past six service where I was wheeled from discharge to pharmacy and left on my own at payments counter. For God’s sakes, I literally had surgery and was under GA. There should be an SOP where the staff ensures to wheel the patient to the lobby instead of leaving patient at lurch. I sincerely hope that the management will look into the operational processes and have better SOPs in place. The only saving grace that SMC has are the amazing doctors they have housed.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER‼️👎🏻 Out of every doctor i've ever met for my family medicals, DR ALEXANDER TAN TOON BONG is one of the WORST AND THE LEAST I've ever encountered. The experience is super horrible as the doctor talk very little and vividly seems doesnt care with the patient 😂 During the consultation, the doctor kept typing the diagnoses from the paper and asked a bit of question to my dad. HE DOESNT EVEN SAY "HELLO" when we first came in. He didnt even dig further how's my dad's routine or anything that may related with the health. I've reached the point where i said "i think u need justify this more to my dad" BUT HE STILL TALK VERY MINIMALL LOL. There was always silence in the room as he didn't try to explain it in details. The consultation without taking any meds from pharmacy - less than 7mins, cost us RM300 ish?! Totally a scam as the doctor is rude. No wonder no patients queuing ya on that day. This is the worst doctor that i've ever met in my entire life. Please reconsider again if u want to book a consultation with him. TOTALLY NOT RECOMMENDED.
