Many doctors I’ve seen before from SJMC are awesome such as Dr Lee Say Fatt, Dr Tang Boon Nee, Dr Goon to name a few. But of course there are bad eggs such as Dr Chandran the ENT outpatient doctor whom I saw today who removed two micro bit of ear wax from my outer ear and prescribed Aerius tablets and the bill amounted to Rm1,107.90. When I went back to see the doctor, he asked me how much I was willing to pay to which I replied that consultation and removing simple ear wax should not be more than RM350 and the total should be less than RM500 considering and understanding that it’s a hospital, which he agreed. However when the bill came back it was not as agreed. It still came up to a total of RM6** and the nurse said the doctor did not agree and it was not expensive. After which she asked me to speak to the manager (whom I did not get the name as he was wearing a white shirt but without a name tag) and his reply was let him check with the doctor as it was ‘up to the doctor to state his price’. This is the unethical part I find of the doctor, nurse and manager. They cover up for each other. Although in the end the price for consultation and removal of ear wax was reduced to RM357 and the total was reduced to RM490, I still feel that this matter of unethical behaviour and handling of this sort of behaviour should be brought to the attention of the hospital and the public-charging unreasonably exorbitantly on part of the doctor and telling the patient that ‘let me check with the doctor as it is up to them to charge’ is not the right method of handling on part of the ‘manager’ as well. It does not make sense that for a simple ear wax removal, the doctor split it into two irrelevant codes namely removal of foreign object and suction cleaning amounting to RM370 for each. It is also amusing that he defined ear wax as a foreign object in the bill. And mine was also to do with the outer ear not the middle ear. Am doing my part as a patient and long standing customer to bring this issue to light but it is up to you if you wish to keep your unethical doctors as this will eventually affect the culture of your hospital.
