Professor Dato' Dr Kwan Mun Keong

Professor Kwan Mun Keong is one of Malaysia’s leading spine surgeons and a highly respected academic in orthopaedic surgery. He obtained his MBBS and MS Orthopaedics from the University of Malaya, giving him strong local medical training; over the years, he has built up both his clinical and research profile substantially. His main sub-specialty is spinal deformity surgery — especially scoliosis (including adolescent idiopathic scoliosis) — and he treats both non-operative and operative cases. He also practices minimally invasive stabilization techniques (MISt) using percutaneous pedicle screws, and deals with complex spinal issues including trauma, tumour, infection, and deformity. In terms of volume and experience, he handles about 300 spine cases a year, with ~200 of those being scoliosis cases, which indicates both high surgical activity and specialization. He has also been active in academic output: more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, contributions to books and book chapters in spinal surgery; awards for research (both basic science and clinical) such as the P. Balasubramaniam Award and Subir Sengupta Award.
