i salute d most dedicated doctors i hv ever met in d country : Prof Kwan, Prof Chiu + Prof Shanaz who worked as a team for my scheduled lumbar surgery in mid Dec 18. however a new MRI revealed tat i actually require a major surgery lasting 4-6 hrs. d concensus arrived at by d team was that i wld be instead given an epidural steroid injection for d timr being by d very competent Prof Shanaz. when he administeted it i felt that it was only an ant bite ! while executing d whole procedure, Prof Shanaz made sure i was comfortable n he spoke in d most calming voice telling what he was going to do next. that put me at ease n filled me wif confidence that it wld be successfully done. of course d pre + post operation manual prepared for patients was most enlightening. inside it are explanations of what to do b4 n aft ur specific surgery. an immensely useful guide for patients. Prof Kwan exudes and inpires confidence in me as to what steps r appropriate for my lumbar's deteriorated condition. he reminds me of d shepherd who knows what to do his 'lost' sheep. Prof Chiu too takes his time to explain patiently n clearly to me + my husband regarding my case.he set up a WhatsApp group chat tat incld d whole team, Prof Kwan's PA Sr Chua, my husband n even my daughter who's far away. meanwhile i hv posed some questions n i alws get prompt replies from d doctors. that leads me to alws wonder : how do these super doctors manage it, wif clinic reviews, surgeries n explanations to patients, ward rounds.. now i m into d 12th day of d steroid jab + i m still doing fine wif minimal nerve pain in my legs n pelvis. these doctors r extremely dedicated to their profession , ethical n full of empathy. they r rare gems in d world of medicine in our country!

My mum was referred to Prof Kwan Mun Leong for her back pain where she has suffered for the last 8 years. We have seen many doctors and Professors on her case for multiple opinions and finally decided to get the surgery done by Prof Kwan in UMSC. We came to this hospital because of him. We were ulterly impressed by our first visit where we were briefed on the diagnosis and treatment in documents, clearly drawn out to us in picture and words. We went home with very clear in terms of how the surgery will be carried out, how much would it cost as well as how to take care before and after the surgery. My mum’s had to go for TLIFT treatment and the surgery was performed by Prof Kwan and Prof Chiu, partner by GA Doctor Shahnaz. 3 of them visited my mum 2 times before going into surgery explaining to us again how the procedures would be done, until we were very clear. During the procedures, we get WhatsApp updates from the team on how the surgery went without us having to worry so much. I am amazed to see my mum able to stand up and walk on the next day of the surgery. All 3 doctors continue to visit my mum and reassure everyone of us in terms of how the surgery went as well as reminding us to perform the care instructions post surgery. We really thank Prof Kwan, Prof Chiu and Dr Shahnaz on the excellent care and services. We are able to get in touch with them through WhatsApp should we have any worries or questions arise even after discharge. Please keep up the great work as this is how you are different from others and we will continue to refer those who needed help to UMSC Orthopaedic Surgery team.

I was diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis and prolapsed intervertebral disc at L5/S1 which caused sciatica problem. Prof Dr Kwan Mun Keong advised me to do surgery (posterior lumbar decompression & posterior lumbar discectomy). I had my surgery on 9th March 2019 performed by Prof Dr Kwan Mun Keong together with Associate Prof Dr Chiu Chee Kidd. Amazingly, my surgery was 100% success and I didn't have any complications during the surgery. I am very happy and satisfy with the medical treatments and care being given. My sciatica pain is gone 99% now and my affected left leg can walk as normal (on the next day after surgery). My wound healed very well (within 2 weeks time). I have only a small scar on my lower back (about 4cm long). My heartfelt thanks to Prof Dr Kwan Mun Keong, Associate Prof Dr Chiu Chee Kidd, Associate Professor Dr Mohd Shahnaz Hassan (anesthetist) and all the nurses for the professional medical treatment and care being given. I am blessed that my surgery was performed by the team. You are truly a team of highly skilled orthopaedic spine surgeons with vast experience and high success rate that we respect and trust. I think my surgery is a piece of cake for you...... Actually, during my stay at UMSC, I feel touched to see the doctors and the rest of the team work so hard in the operator theater for the patients until late night. I could see compassion, love and "passion for medicine" besides professionalism in you all. Many thanks to Associate Professor Dr Mohd Shahnaz. I was surprised that I have almost no pain at my wound site which I was so afraid of prior to my surgery! The only pain that I felt after the surgery was lower back muscle pain (minor) and sometimes a little uncomfortable feeling at lower part my left leg till the foot, which were only temporary. Thanks to Prof Dr Kwan and Associate Prof Dr Chiu for giving a transparent discussion about the risks vs benefits of the surgery prior to the surgery. Also, thanks for educating us (patient and his/her family member) through a clear step-by-step instructions from preparation for the operation till discharge and then follow-up, which was also printed and given it as a file to the patient. The information in the file is really useful and helpful for the patient and also caregiver and we really appreciate it......In fact, this is my first time to meet a doctor who gave hand phone number to the patients for them to contact when there is a problem. This made me feel that the doctors are very responsible, communicative, willing to listen to the patient's problems and always ready to help, work hand-in-hand with the patient & also his/her family member and more importantly they love and care for the patients so much! All these made us feel safe, worry less and higher confidence towards recovery and the success of the surgery. I am so grateful for all that you and your team have done. Special thanks to Prof Dr Chiu Chee Kidd for taking the time out of your busy schedule to write a letter for my medical insurance claim as requested by my insurance company. I really appreciate it. Many thanks to all the nurses who have taking such good care of me!
